1. Introduction Cartography Section is located on Level 1, Land and Survey Department, Headquarters, Kuching. Cartography Section is entrusted with the responsibility for producing and maintaining topographic, thematic maps and town maps of Sarawak. These maps are classified into Restricted and Unrestricted maps, and are available for general information and usage of Government agencies, statutory bodies and general public, upon application.
2. History Cartography Section was first set up in 1946, as part of the Drawing Office in Survey Branch at Land and Survey Department.
During the period from1947 to 1956 the Australian Royal Air Force stationed in Singapore assisted the Department in taking aerial photographs for mapping purposes. Mapping at the scale of 1:50,000 series for the State of Sarawak was first introduced by the Directorate of Overseas Survey (D.O.S.), United Kingdom, this map series consisted of a total of 213 map sheets covering the whole State of Sarawak.
For the period from 1956 to 1957 Land Use maps at the scale of 1:250,000 were produced for the State and comprised of 7 map sheets.
From 1958 onwards other series of maps at various scales, namely 60 miles to an inch; 1:125,000; 1:500,000; 1:1,000,000 and 1:2,000,000 were complied and produced by the Department.
