Photolitho

1. History

The Photolitho Section was established in 1962 as part of the Survey Branch in Headquarters and was first known as the Reproduction Section. The functions of the Section then were to carry out aerial survey and printing of aerial photographs for mapping purposes and to reproduce aerial photographs, maps, survey plans and other important documents for the use of the Department, other Government agencies and statutory bodies.

The role of Photolitho Section expended in 1978 with the acquisition of various offset printing equipment. The new equipment enable the Department to carry out its own map printing –that is  from the initial map data acquisition to the final stage of map making process & production, these processes were previously  carried out in the Department of Survey and Mapping in Kuala Lumpur. By 1980, book-binding equipment was acquired to supplement the printing equipment and to manufacture numerous stationery, to meet the needs of the Department's at the time. Over the years more equipment related to printing were acquired to enhance the quality of information needed for modern mapping methods and for other specific requirements.

In 1980, the Section was renamed from Reproduction Section to the present name of Photolitho Section, to reflect the actual activities undertaken by the Section. This is due to the fact that by then, the nature of work had extended to cover aerial photography survey, general reprographic work and lithography, as well as to be in-line with a similar section in the Department of Survey and Mapping in Kuala Lumpur.
